LEWIS COAL MINE NEVADA
And Nearby East Walker River Hot Springs
Unoccupied Mine Site
Lyon County Nevada
Circa 1860
Not a very well known mine site today, The Lewis Coal Mine was once the talk of the 1800’s Nevada mining community. Not for its striking view of the East Walker River, nor its proximity to one of natures most beautiful hot springs; it was all the rage because coal is not a known resource of Nevada. Not then, not now, and probably not ever! Its earliest mention was in 1860 by the Minerals & Science Press V.2 Issue #39, since then the mine has been mentioned periodically in local mining journals in to the 1970’s. and judging by the litter of materials and equipment scattered about, It is probably about the time the mine was last worked.
